Assalamualaikum Warahmatullahi WabarakatuhBelow are notes based on Sheikh Yasir Qadhi’s lectures on the Fiqh of Umrah.

Fiqh of Umrah OverviewDefinition:

Umrah means to "intend and visit" the House of Allah. It is one of the greatest acts of worship, sometimes referred to as the "lesser Hajj." For every step you take toward Makkah, Allah SWT raises your rank or forgives a sin.

Key Terms:

• Hujjaj: Person performing Hajj
• Ummaru/Mu’tamir: Person performing Umrah

Benefits of Umrah from Hadith:

1. Forgives minor sins committed since the previous Umrah, provided major sins are avoided.
2. Cleanses a person from poverty.
3. Acts as Jihad for those unable to participate in military Jihad.
4. The Prophet SAW said, "The Hujjaj and Mu’tamir are the guests of Allah SWT. He called them, and they responded. If they ask Allah SWT, He will grant their requests."
5. Increases acceptance of Dua due to multiple blessings: being a traveler, visiting Allah’s House, and being a guest of Allah SWT.
6. Performing Umrah during Ramadan equals the reward of Hajj.

Fiqh of Umrah:Rukun (Fardh) Acts:

These are obligatory; skipping any invalidates Umrah:

1. Ihram (Making Niyyah)
2. Tawaf
3. Sa’ee

Wajib Acts:
Missing these requires a Kaffarah (sacrifice):

1. Entering Ihram before the Miqat
2. Shaving or trimming hair after Umrah

Sunnah Acts:

These acts enhance Umrah but are not obligatory.

Details for Each Stage:

Ihram:

• Definition: Ihram refers to making the intention (Niyyah) for Umrah. It can be done verbally or in the heart, in any language.

• Sunnah Before Entering Ihram:
  1. Take a Ghusl (even if menstruating).
  2. Apply perfume to the body (not to the Ihram clothing).
  3. Trim nails and shave pubic hair.
  4. Dress appropriately:
     • Men: Two white unstitched garments.
     • Women: No restrictions, but must observe modesty.

• Talbiyah: Recite loudly until entering Masjid Al Haram:
  Labbaik Allahumma labbaik, labbaika la shareeka laka labbaik, innal hamda wan-ni'matah laka wal mulk, la shareeka laka.

• Translation: "Here I am, O Allah! Here I am; there is no partner to You. All praise, blessings, and sovereignty are Yours; there is no partner to You."

Tawaf:


Requirements:

• Shafi’, Maliki, Hanbali: Wudhu is Fardh.
• Hanafi: Wudhu is Wajib.

Steps:

1. Begin at Hajar Al Aswad, saying Bismillahi Allahu Akbar.
2. Perform seven circuits, starting and ending at Hajar Al Aswad.

Sunnah Acts During Tawaf:
​

• Idtiba: Uncover the right shoulder (for men).
• Ramal: Fast-paced walking during the first three circuits.
• Touch Rukun Al Yamani: If possible, without gesturing.
• Dua between Rukun Al Yamani and Hajar Al Aswad:
  Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanah wa fil-akhirati hasanah waqina azaban-nar.

Maqam Ibrahim:After Tawaf, pray two Rak’ahs behind Maqam Ibrahim (if possible, without obstructing others). Recite:

1. Surah Al-Kafirun in the first Rak’ah.
2. Surah Al-Ikhlas in the second Rak’ah.
   Drink Zamzam water afterward, making Duas before drinking.

Sa’ee:

• Details: Walk seven circuits between Safa and Marwa. One circuit = Safa to Marwa or Marwa to Safa.
• Green Poles: Men jog between them, symbolizing Hajar AS’s effort.
• Reflect on the story of Hajar and Ismail AS.

Halaq/Taqsir (Haircut):

• Men: Shave the head or trim it. Shaving (using a blade, not a machine) is preferred.
• Women: Trim a fingertip’s length of hair.

Sunnah Acts in Masjid Al Haram:

1. Hijr Ismail: Praying here equals praying inside the Ka’aba.
2. Multazam: Make heartfelt Duas at this area between the Ka’aba’s door and Hajar Al Aswad.
3. Tawaf: Perform optional Tawafs as acts of worship.

Summary of Umrah Steps:

1. Wear Ihram and make Niyyah.
2. Recite Talbiyah en route to Masjid Al Haram.
3. Perform Tawaf (seven circuits).
4. Pray two Rak’ahs at Maqam Ibrahim.
5. Drink Zamzam water.
6. Perform Sa’ee (seven circuits).
7. Complete with Halaq/Taqsir.

Trivia:
​

• Umrah during Ramadan = Hajj in reward.
• The Multazam is a prime spot for Dua acceptance.
• Optional Tawaf can be done outside Umrah or Hajj.
• Women on their periods may perform all acts of Umrah except Tawaf.
• Children performing Umrah bring reward to parents.
• The Ka’aba’s four corners are Hajar Al Aswad, Rukun Al Yamani, Rukun Al Iraqi, and Rukun Al Shami.
